Unhappy Can You Work and Still Get Partial Perm Disability

I have been told to consider partial perm disability for a knee injury that I had surgery on a yr ago, as I can't do the same things as before. My problem is there would be no way to live on just that what ever the amt of money I would be getting a month. Can you work and still collect this? I am now thinking seriously about it since I have now injured my wrist as well. The job is very physical, and as much as I love it, I am not sure that I can physically do it much longer. And can I go to partial perm. disability at any time if I feel I can't do it anymore?
